Flying into Flores for Tikal is one of Guatemala’s great travel experiences — the approach over the Petén jungle, the Cessna or ATR descending toward an airstrip surrounded by trees, and the awareness that one of the ancient world’s great cities is just 40 minutes away. Here’s how to do it right.
The flight from GUA to FRS
TAG Air departs Guatemala City’s La Aurora International (GUA) for the 55-minute flight north into the Petén. The aircraft crosses the volcanic highlands and drops into the lowland jungle basin — a visible transition from highland agriculture to unbroken tropical forest. On clear days, the pyramids of Yaxhá and smaller Maya sites are visible from the air on approach to Flores.
From the airport to Tikal
Flores airport is 66km from Tikal’s main entrance — a 45-minute minibus ride through jungle. Most TAG Air packages include transport to the site. Arriving by the 8am flight (the earliest TAG departure) gives you the park from 9am–3pm — enough for a thorough visit with a private guide, avoiding the 10am–noon crowds.
The private charter advantage: sunrise
Tikal’s most spectacular experience is Temple IV at sunrise — 5am in the park, watching the jungle canopy emerge from mist as howler monkeys wake below. To do this on TAG Air requires arriving the previous afternoon and sleeping at the park lodges. AeroRide’s private charter can depart GUA at 4:30am and land at FRS for a private vehicle transfer to Temple IV in time for sunrise — then fly back to Guatemala City by noon.
