SANSATravel TipsCosta Rica
SANSA flights are a quintessential Costa Rica travel experience — small aircraft, panoramic views and a genuine sense of adventure. Here’s what first-time passengers need to know to make the experience smooth.
Baggage: plan carefully
SANSA’s 12kg checked baggage limit is enforced. Surfboards are allowed on some routes with advance arrangement and a fee. Dive gear, large camera equipment and golf bags require advance notice and may not be accommodated. If you’re traveling with significant luggage or equipment, private charter eliminates these constraints entirely — AeroRide has no arbitrary weight limits for the whole aircraft.
Check-in and aircraft boarding
SANSA operates from a dedicated terminal at SJO and SYQ. Check-in opens 2 hours before departure. The aircraft hold less than 15 passengers, so boarding is quick and informal. Seats are not assigned — arrive early for better views (left side for Pacific coast flights, right side heading to Tortuguero).
Weather delays
Costa Rica’s mountainous terrain and rapidly changing weather cause more delays on domestic routes than international carriers. Afternoon thunderstorms are common May–November. SANSA’s morning departures are generally more reliable. Private charter offers more flexibility to wait out weather or reroute.
