Placencia — the quieter, more authentic alternative to Ambergris Caye. Boutique resorts on a 26-kilometer peninsula, humpback whale watching, Glover’s Reef diving, and the most beautiful sunsets in Belize.
Placencia: The Belize That Travelers Who Know Belize Choose
There is a pattern among serious Belize travelers: they visit Ambergris Caye first (because everyone does), discover they want something quieter and more genuine, and then find Placencia. The peninsula — 26 kilometers of Caribbean coastline tapering to the village of Placencia at its southern tip, connected to the mainland by one road — has been developing slowly and thoughtfully for two decades, and the result is a destination that has gained quality without losing the authentic Caribbean character that makes Belize different from every other Caribbean destination.
Placencia village is the southernmost point of the peninsula: a collection of fishing houses, restaurants, and small hotels on a beach path (the “Sidewalk” — one of the narrowest streets in the world, at approximately 4 feet wide) with the Caribbean on one side and the lagoon on the other. The atmosphere is relaxed to the point of somnolent — and entirely genuinely so. This is not manufactured authenticity.
Why Choose Placencia Over Ambergris
The Reef Is Further — And That’s Actually Good
The barrier reef is further from Placencia than from Ambergris (requiring a 1-hour boat trip rather than 10 minutes) — but the diving sites accessed from Placencia, particularly the Glover’s Reef Atoll, are in considerably better condition than the more heavily dived sites near Ambergris. For serious divers who want pristine reef rather than convenient reef, Placencia wins.
The Humpback Whale Watching
From July through October, humpback whales migrate through the waters off the southern Belize coast, passing closest to Placencia of any point on the coast. Private whale watching charters from the Placencia marina provide encounters with these animals (mothers with calves born in Antarctic waters) that are simply not available from Ambergris.
The Garifuna Villages
The coast between Dangriga and Placencia is lined with Garifuna communities — Hopkins, Seine Bight, Pelican Beach — that are among the most authentic and musically extraordinary communities in Belize. The Garifuna drum tradition (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) is most accessible here, and the traditional food (hudut, sere, cassava bread) is exceptional.
Where to Stay in Placencia
Turtle Inn — Francis Ford Coppola’s Beach Property ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The finest resort on the Placencia peninsula — Coppola’s beach complement to his inland Blancaneaux Lodge. Turtle Inn consists of 23 individual thatched villas on the beach, each with private garden, outdoor shower, and direct beach access. The design is Balinese-influenced (Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now in Bali when he became interested in this style), with handmade furniture and remarkable attention to detail. The restaurant uses Coppola wine and local ingredients. From $450/night.
Laru Beya Resort ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A smaller boutique resort north of Placencia village with an extraordinary beachfront position, infinity pool, and the most comprehensive dive operation on the peninsula. The overwater bungalow category — limited to 4 units over the lagoon — is the finest accommodation in this price category on the peninsula. From $200/night.

✦ Placencia vs. Ambergris: The Decision
Choose Ambergris Caye if: you want the most complete Caribbean island experience with the best restaurant scene, the most resort options, and easy Blue Hole access. Choose Placencia if: you want a quieter, more authentic Belize with better pristine reef diving, humpback whale watching (July–October), Garifuna cultural access, and the Coppola Turtle Inn experience. Many experienced Belize travelers do both on a 10-day trip.
