Perquín and La Ruta de la Paz: El Salvador's Undiscovered North

Perquín and La Ruta de la Paz — the mountain villages of Morazán where El Salvador’s civil war history meets extraordinary highland nature. The most off-the-beaten-path destination in El Salvador for the intellectually curious traveler.

Perquín: Where History Is Still Present

Perquín is a small mountain town in the department of Morazán in northern El Salvador, 230 kilometers from San Salvador on a road that climbs progressively through highland pine forests and traditional coffee-growing villages. It is the most historically significant tourism destination in El Salvador for travelers interested in the country’s 20th-century history, and one of the most scenically beautiful areas in the country.

During El Salvador’s civil war (1979–1992), the department of Morazán was the primary stronghold of the FMLN guerrilla movement. Perquín was effectively the guerrilla capital — the location of Radio Venceremos, the underground radio station that broadcast the opposition’s message throughout the conflict, and the site of some of the most intense combat of the 12-year war. The Museo de la Revolución Salvadoreña (Museum of the Salvadoran Revolution) in Perquín is the most honest and complete museum of the civil war period in the country.

The Museum of the Salvadoran Revolution

The museum is operated by veterans of the FMLN guerrilla movement — men and women who fought in the conflict and who present its history from their own perspective, with the kind of personal authenticity and detail that no academic presentation can replicate. The museum contains: personal weapons and equipment used during the conflict, the remains of Radio Venceremos broadcasting equipment, photographs and personal testimonies from combatants on both sides, and a bomb crater in the parking area from a military air strike during the war that has been left exactly as it fell.

A visit with a guide who was personally involved in the conflict produces one of the most emotionally powerful and intellectually honest history experiences available anywhere in Central America. This is not comfortable history — it is complex, morally ambiguous, and told by people who have their own perspective on events. It is also utterly real.

Nature and Landscape in Morazán

Beyond its historical significance, Morazán offers landscape of genuine beauty. The highland pine forests of the Pico El Pital area (the highest point in El Salvador at 2,730m) provide birdwatching of extraordinary quality — resplendent quetzals have been recorded in the cloud forest above 2,000m, a significant draw for serious birders. The waterfalls of the Río Sapo (including the swimming hole at El Salto del Sapo) are among the most beautiful natural bathing spots in El Salvador.
