The Corn Islands — Big Corn and Little Corn — are Nicaragua’s Caribbean secret: two small islands surrounded by crystal-clear reef, with fresh lobster, laid-back Creole culture and a fraction of the tourist crowds of Belize or Costa Rica. La Costeña’s MGA–RNI flight is the most practical way to reach them.
The flight to Corn Island
La Costeña departs Managua’s domestic terminal for the 90-minute flight to Big Corn Island (RNI). The aircraft is small (typically a 19-seat Cessna or similar) and flies low enough to see Caribbean coastline and reef on the approach. Big Corn’s airport is a modest airstrip — arrival feels genuinely remote and adds to the adventure.
Getting to Little Corn
Little Corn Island — the smaller, car-free gem of the pair — is a 30-minute panga (small boat) ride from Big Corn’s dock. There’s no airstrip on Little Corn, so everyone arrives by sea from Big Corn. Factor this into your schedule when booking La Costeña — missing the afternoon panga means staying on Big Corn overnight.
Peak season: book early
La Costeña’s Corn Island capacity is limited and demand is high in December–April and July–August. In peak season, flights can be fully booked 2–3 weeks in advance. A group of 4+ might find that a private charter from MGA to RNI — with guaranteed seating, departure flexibility and no waiting list risk — is worth the marginal extra cost.
