Short on time in Guatemala? This sample itinerary hits the highlights while keeping transfers quick by flying the long legs — so you spend your days exploring rather than sitting in traffic.
Days 1–2: Guatemala City and nearby
Start in Guatemala City to settle in, sample the food (pepián, kak’ik and rellenitos) and see the highlights, then begin moving toward Antigua. A relaxed first couple of days beats the jet-lag rush.
Days 3–4: Tikal
Head to Tikal, the country’s signature destination. Flying instead of driving turns a long travel day into a short hop — see Guatemala City to Tikal.
Day 5: beaches or nature
Finish on the coast (Monterrico) or in a national park (Tikal National Park), depending on whether you want to unwind or get active. Both are covered in our beaches and national parks guides.
Add-ons if you have more time
- An extra island or beach day for diving or surfing.
- A volcano hike or coffee-country detour.
- A second city or colonial town for culture and food.
How flying makes it possible
The reason this itinerary works in five days is the short flights. From Costa Rica, San José → Guatemala City connects you in; within the region, charters keep the transfers tiny. Request a flight to lock in your routing.
