The perfect 7-day Belize luxury itinerary — Belize City, the Great Blue Hole, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and a jungle lodge. Crafted for the discerning traveler who wants the complete Belize experience.
Seven Days in Belize: The Perfect Caribbean + Jungle Journey
Seven days is the ideal length for Belize. It is enough time to experience both the Caribbean coast (the reef, the cayes, the diving) and the jungle interior (the Maya sites, the wildlife lodges, the caves) without rushing either, and without duplicating experiences that are similar. This itinerary represents the best sequence our team has developed over years of curating Belize trips for luxury travelers.
Day 1: Arrival — Belize City and Transfer to Ambergris
Fly into Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE). Clear customs and transfer directly to the Tropic Air or Maya Island Air counter for your domestic flight to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye (20 minutes — one of the finest short flights in Central America, passing directly over the reef). Check into Victoria House. Walk San Pedro Town at sunset. Dinner at El Fogón.
Day 2: Reef Orientation — Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley
Morning snorkel or dive at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley — the essential Belize reef experience. The nurse sharks and stingrays of Shark Ray Alley are the perfect introduction to Belizean underwater life. Afternoon free for the resort pool or golf-cart exploration of San Pedro. Dinner at Elvi’s Kitchen (the island institution, open since 1974).
Day 3: The Great Blue Hole — The Defining Experience
Full-day Blue Hole excursion. For certified divers (Advanced Open Water minimum): boat tour to Lighthouse Reef Atoll, two dives at the Blue Hole (40-meter depth, stalactites, reef sharks), lunch at Half Moon Caye, one more dive at the booby colony wall. For non-divers: helicopter overflight tour in the morning, snorkel at Half Moon Caye in the afternoon. Return to Ambergris by 5 PM. Celebratory dinner.
Day 4: Caye Caulker — The Peaceful Contrast
Water taxi from San Pedro to Caye Caulker (30 minutes). The contrast with Ambergris is immediate and deliberate: smaller, quieter, no golf carts (bicycles only), one main street, and the famous “Split” — the channel that divides the island, with a swimming area and bar that is arguably the most characterful day-drinking spot in the Caribbean. Morning free for snorkeling from the Split dock. Afternoon: return to Ambergris or stay on Caye Caulker for the night (Iguana Reef Inn is the best accommodation).
Day 5: Transfer to the Jungle — Cayo District
Morning domestic flight from San Pedro to Belize City (20 min), then private vehicle transfer to Cayo district (2.5 hours on the Western Highway — a beautiful drive through the country’s interior). Check into The Lodge at Chaa Creek or Blancaneaux Lodge. Afternoon: guided walk on the property with naturalist guide (first jaguar-track sighting typically occurs here). Dinner at the lodge.
Day 6: Xunantunich and the Macal River
Morning visit to Xunantunich archaeological site (1 hour from Chaa Creek) with a private archaeologist guide. The site has the finest frieze sculpture in Belize and El Castillo (the main temple) with views of the Guatemalan border mountains from its summit. Afternoon: canoe trip on the Macal River with a naturalist guide (manatees in the dry season, river otters, kingfishers, jaguarundi on the banks). Evening: night walk on the property with spotlight for nocturnal wildlife.
Day 7: Cave Tubing and Departure
Morning cave tubing at Caves Branch (1.5 hours from Chaa Creek, 1 hour from BZE) — floating through the illuminated passages of an ancient Maya ceremonial cave system, the most unique Belize activity available to non-divers. Transfer to Belize City. International departure.
