AviancaCentral AmericaBogotá
Avianca is one of Latin America’s oldest and most recognized carriers, with a Central America presence built around its Bogotá (BOG) hub and its legacy El Salvador hub (SAL) at Monseñor Óscar Romero International Airport. Together, these hubs connect the region to South America and North America.
Avianca’s Central America footprint
Avianca serves San José (SJO), Guatemala City (GUA), Tegucigalpa (TGU), San Salvador (SAL), Panama City (PTY) and Managua (MGA) with varying frequencies. The network is strong for South American connections — Bogotá to anywhere in Central America is usually within 3 hours — but thinner for intra-regional routes than Copa.
The SAL hub advantage
El Salvador’s Comalapa Airport (SAL) is underused and remarkably efficient — short security lines, immediate boarding and often the least stressful airport in Central America for connections. If Avianca’s routing takes you through SAL, the experience is generally faster than PTY or GUA.
The private charter case
Where Avianca’s Central America network struggles is the same place Copa struggles — intra-regional travel to smaller airports. Flying from Bogotá to the Osa Peninsula, Bocas del Toro or Roatán on Avianca requires multiple connections and a day of travel. AeroRide’s private charters cover all of these in a single direct flight.
