Choosing Your Ambergris Caye Resort
Ambergris Caye’s resort landscape has two distinct zones with different characters. The southern zone (around San Pedro Town) offers proximity to restaurants, nightlife, and services, with resort accommodation ranging from intimate boutique to full-service large resort. The northern zone (accessible only by boat) offers complete privacy, pristine reef access, and a genuinely remote Caribbean experience within 20 minutes of the town.
Victoria House — Our First Recommendation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The most elegant and consistently excellent resort on Ambergris Caye. Victoria House occupies 400 meters of private beach south of San Pedro Town, with a collection of rooms, suites, casitas, and villas ranging from comfortable garden rooms to extraordinary thatched palapa villas directly on the beach. The property has been continuously refined over three decades and shows it: the service is the most professional on the island, the dive operation is excellent, the restaurant (serving contemporary Belizean cuisine with exceptional fresh fish) is the finest at any resort on the island. Matachica Resort & Spa — The Private Caribbean ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Accessible only by boat from San Pedro (15 minutes), Matachica is positioned on the northern shore of Ambergris with a private beach, overwater casitas and inland thatched villas, a reef immediately accessible from the dock, and the kind of complete privacy that road-access properties cannot provide. Portofino Beach Resort — For the Active Traveler ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Also in the northern zone, accessible by boat, Portofino is the most activities-focused of the northern resorts: a comprehensive dive operation, kayaks and paddleboards on the beach, a fitness program, and a reef immediately accessible from the dock. The accommodation is comfortable thatched-roof cabanas rather than the design luxury of Matachica, but the overall experience — active, nature-focused, genuine — is very good. Adults-only. Las Terrazas Resort — The Condo Alternative ⭐⭐⭐⭐

✦ Booking Strategy for Ambergris Resorts
Victoria House and Matachica both require 4–6 months advance booking for peak season (December–April). Portofino and Ramon’s Village are more bookable on shorter notice. For the northern resorts (Matachica, Portofino), water taxi transfers from San Pedro are included — factor in the 15–20 minute boat commute when planning day trips to town.
