The Air Panama BLB–BOC route is the most popular domestic flight in Panama and one of the most important in Central America. Bocas del Toro’s archipelago — nine Caribbean jungle islands with overwater bungalows, world-class surf and the bioluminescent bay of Bastimentos — is the destination; Air Panama is the most practical way to get there.
The flight and what to expect
Air Panama departs Albrook (BLB) multiple times daily for the 55-minute hop across the Continental Divide to Bocas Town (BOC). The flight crosses the highlands and descends to the Caribbean side, with spectacular views of cloud forest, Caribbean coastline and the Bocas archipelago on approach. Seating is open on most flights — window seats are worth fighting for.
Baggage reality
Air Panama has a 25lb (11kg) baggage limit on the BLB–BOC route. Surfboards are allowed for a fee with advance booking — not guaranteed. Kayaks, oversized dive equipment and large musical instruments (for music-focused travelers) require advance arrangement and are often declined. Private charter eliminates this entirely.
When private charter makes more sense
Any group of 4+ flying BLB–BOC will find private charter competitive. AeroRide’s BLB–BOC charter: $800–1,100 for the aircraft, or $200–275 per person for 4 passengers. Air Panama: ~$120–160 per person. The difference is $80–115 per person for a dedicated aircraft with no baggage limits, departure flexibility and no minimum-connection risk.
