Contadora Island — Las Perlas Archipelago. 5 min to Contadora beach.
Contadora Island Airport (IATA: OTD, ICAO: MPCO) serves one of the most historically glamorous and ecologically pristine islands in the Americas. Contadora — the largest of the 39 Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama — is accessible exclusively by air (25 minutes from PAC by private propeller aircraft) or by speedboat from Panama City (70 minutes), creating an isolation that has been central to the island's identity for over a century.
The Pearl Islands were named for the extraordinary pearl oyster beds discovered by the Spanish conquistadors — the La Peregrina pearl, found here and later owned by Mary Queen of Scots, King Philip II of Spain, Joseph Bonaparte, and ultimately Elizabeth Taylor, is the most famous pearl ever found in the Americas. Contadora itself has been the preferred retreat of the Latin American elite since the early 20th century.
The island achieved its most dramatic historical moment in 1979, when the deposed Shah of Iran — forced out of his country by the Islamic Revolution — spent several months here in exile, receiving treatment at the Punta Galeon resort clinic. Presidents, CEOs, film directors, and artists have maintained private residences on Contadora's hills since, drawn by the combination of extraordinary Pacific Pacific views, Caribbean-quality water, and the absolute privacy afforded by an island with limited visitor access.
Today, Contadora has 10 beaches, excellent snorkeling over reef systems that include encounters with Pacific spotted dolphins, humpback whales (July–October), hammerhead sharks, and manta rays in the surrounding waters. The island has no traffic lights, no chain hotels, no commercial noise. What it has is the most beautiful water in Panama and a peace that money in a city cannot buy.

Contadora Island Airport (IATA: OTD, ICAO: MPCO) is a small asphalt airstrip on Contadora Island in the Pearl Islands, Gulf of Panama. 1,160m runway, 19m elevation, daylight operations. The only practical air access to Contadora — accessible by private propeller aircraft from Panama City (PAC) in 25 minutes.
By air: private propeller charter from Marcos Gelabert (PAC) — 25 minutes. This is AeroRide's recommended option. By sea: speedboat from Flamenco Marina on the Amador Causeway — approximately 70 minutes. There are no ferry services to Contadora.
Contadora is worth a minimum of 2 nights. The island reveals itself slowly — the best beaches require finding, the best snorkel sites require early morning light, and the sunset from the hilltop villas is a daily ritual that no single-day visit can include. Day-trippers from Panama City primarily stay at Playa Cacique; overnight guests experience the island as it actually is.
La Peregrina — one of the most famous pearls in history, found in these waters by a slave in the 16th century — passed through the Spanish Crown, Napoleon's family, and was eventually purchased by Richard Burton for Elizabeth Taylor in 1969 for $37,000. It sold at Christie's in 2011 for OTD FAQ Contadora Airport — Frequently Asked Questions 1.8 million.
OTD has a 1,160-meter asphalt runway at 19m elevation. Daylight operations only. ICAO: MPCO. Accommodates propeller aircraft up to Cessna Caravan size. Not suitable for jets.
Yes — the most efficient routing is San José (SJO/SYQ) → Panama City (PAC) → Contadora (OTD), with a brief connection at PAC. The total journey from San José to stepping onto Contadora beach is approximately 90 minutes. AeroRide coordinates the full connection.
