San Salvador Ilopango International Airport (IATA: ILS, ICAO: MSSS) is El Salvador's general aviation and military aviation hub — the closer, older airport to San Salvador's city center (15 minutes vs. 45 minutes for SAL), built on the edge of the extraordinary Lago de Ilopango, the volcanic caldera lake that sits at 614 meters above sea level immediately east of the capital.
Ilopango has a history as old as San Salvador itself — the site was used as a landing field during El Salvador's first aviation decades, became the country's principal airport until the construction of the current international airport (then known as Comalapa, now SAL) in 1980, and has since served as the headquarters of the Fuerza Aérea Salvadoreña (Salvadoran Air Force) and as the primary base for general aviation, air ambulance, aerial photography, and private charter operations within and around the metropolitan area.
