Drake Bay — Costa Rica

Drake Bay Airport (IATA: DRK, ICAO: MRDK) is the most dramatic airport arrival in Costa Rica. The 700-meter grass airstrip drops off a hillside above the Pacific — you land looking at the open ocean, surrounded by rainforest, with the sound of howler monkeys audible from the taxiway. There is no terminal building in the conventional sense. There is no road to Drake Bay from the rest of Costa Rica. What there is, however, is one of the greatest concentrations of extraordinary nature in Central America.

Drake Bay is accessible only by air (from San José, 55 minutes by private charter or Sansa scheduled service) or by a 45-minute boat ride from Sierpe, which itself requires a 1.5-hour drive from Palmar Sur. The village consists of a handful of lodges, a small school, a clinic, and the collective consciousness of a community that has chosen remoteness over convenience.

From Drake Bay, the north coast of Corcovado National Park's San Pedrillo ranger station is 30 minutes by boat. The legendary Sirena biological station — the most biodiverse research station in the Americas — is 45 minutes by boat and requires advance permits. Day hikes from the lodges encounter scarlet macaws (in extraordinary numbers), toucans, frigate birds over the bay, and often tapir tracks on the beach at dawn.

For the serious nature traveler or any visitor seeking genuine wild immersion, Drake Bay is the finest destination in Costa Rica — and one of the finest in the world.

FAQ

Drake Bay Airport — Frequently Asked Questions

What is Drake Bay Airport (DRK)?

Drake Bay Airport (IATA: DRK, ICAO: MRDK) is a small grass airstrip serving Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula. It is the only practical air access to Drake Bay and the north coast of Corcovado National Park. The 700m runway operates during daylight hours and is weather-dependent. No road connects Drake Bay to the rest of Costa Rica.

How do I get to Drake Bay?

By air (recommended): private charter from San José takes 55 minutes. Sansa Airlines operates scheduled service. By boat: take a bus or taxi to Sierpe (1.5h from Palmar Norte), then a 45-minute boat down the Sierpe River and across the Drake Bay estuary. The air option eliminates 4–5 hours of total travel time.

What lodges meet guests at Drake Bay airport?

All Drake Bay lodges coordinate airport transfers. Since there is no road from the airstrip to the village, transfer is typically by boat along the coast (10 minutes) or by tractor-and-cart on a rough trail. Your lodge will have specific instructions. AeroRide coordinates ground logistics as part of any Drake Bay charter booking.

Can private jets land at DRK?

No — DRK's 700-meter grass runway accommodates only small propeller aircraft: Cessna 208 Caravans (up to 9 passengers), Cessna 182, Piper Seneca, and similar light aircraft. AeroRide operates appropriate aircraft for all Drake Bay flights.

Is Drake Bay worth visiting for non-biologists?

Absolutely. Drake Bay's wildlife encounters — scarlet macaws overhead, dolphins in the bay at sunset, whale watching within sight of the lodge, and forest walks with expert guides — are accessible and memorable for any traveler regardless of biological background. The remoteness is itself part of the experience. Drake Bay is consistently cited as one of Costa Rica's most transformative destinations.
